History Of Umbrellas
Share
The word umbrella comes from the word umbra which literally means
shaded area.Even though umbrellas are now days more commonlly
used for protecting you from rain they were designed thousands of
years ago to protect kings ,queens and holy men from the sun in
places like china and egypt. They even though people under a
umbrella was protected by god. It was the ancient greeks that
introduced them to europe but was the romans that introduced them
to keep them dry from the rain. A great little poem from the 19th
century summed it up :
‘The rain it raineth every day
Upon the just and unjust fellow
But chiefly on the just because
the unjust stole the just’s umbrella’
It wasnt to the late 19th century that the stronger steel frames
replaced the old fashioned cane skeletons. These steel frames allowed
for much bigger umbrellas to be used. Back then umbrellas were
normally black where as nowadays they come in all sorts of colours ,patterns, shape and sizes as you can see from our site.
